Badminton

Year 9 – 10 School Badminton Champs  

Any Year 9 or 10 students interested in playing in the school badminton champs, there is a sign – up sheet available in the Sports Office. 

The champs will be held on Thursday, 8 September from 3:10 pm – 5:30 pm in the gym

Southland Badminton Championships

This annual event is where schools from around Southland compete against each other to find the top boys and girls teams in the region. Your child has been selected to represent Southland Girls’ High at this competition. Please read the following information below and complete the permission form due by Monday 8 August 2022.

  • Date: Thursday 11 August 2022
  • Venue: Surrey Park Badminton Hall
  • Who: selected students
  • Time: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
  • Cost: no cost to enter
  • Transport: students are to make their own way to the event. For anyone needing assistance with transport please get in contact with Mrs Wilson.
  • Uniform requirements: students are to wear the school PE uniform and take warm clothing while they are not playing, including the school jacket.  Please remember your facemasks.

Badminton Years 7 – 13 Term 3

Interschool Badminton Competition is a 6 week competition that students play in teams of three. Each student will play singles and two doubles against teams from other Invercargill schools. Racquets are provided if your child doesn’t have one.

Students in Years 9 – 13 can enter to play in either the Monday or Tuesday competition. Year 7 – 8 students will play on a Thursday.  If your child wishes to play Term 3 Badminton please read through the following information and complete the permission form by Friday 8 July 2022.

  • Venue: Badminton Hall, Surrey Park
  • Who: Year 7-13 teams
  • When: competition starts the week of 8 August 2022
    • Monday’s Year 9 – 13 teams
    • Tuesday’s Year 9 – 13 teams
    • Thursday’s Year 7 – 8 teams
  • Time: from 4 pm – 5:15 pm

Basketball

BASKETBALL – Year 7/8 (Term 4)

SGHS will be entering Year 7/8 Basketball teams into the Southland Basketball Secondary School competition. The competition runs across 6 weeks and is held on Friday afternoons at ILT Stadium Southland. 

For your child to enter this competition please read through the following information and complete the permission form – due by Friday 30 September 2022.

  • Date: Friday 21 October  – Friday 25 November 2022 (this may be extended to 2 December depending if any games are cancelled due to other events at the stadium).
  • Venue: ILT Stadium Southland, Invercargill
  • Grades: Year 7/8 Teams
  • Competition info: All games will be held at ILT Stadium Southland. It is the student’s responsibility to get transport too and from the games.
  • Times: All games are held between 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  • Draws: will be available each week in the SGHS Sports Office.
  • Training: to be confirmed.
  • Uniform: Year 7/8 SGHS PE Uniform and sneakers. A mouth guard is compulsory for all players, and is to be worn while playing on court.
  • Coaches/Managers: we do require a team coach/manager for each team entered into this competition. If you are able to assist please indicate this on the permission form.
  • Cost: $42.00 per player – full payment due by Monday 17 October 2022.

NZSS Basketball AA Premiership Zone 4

The senior A basketball team will compete in the NZSS Basketball AA premiership tournament being held at ILT Stadium Southland. For your child to attend tournament week please read through the following information and complete the permission form due by Tuesday 30 August 2022.

  • Dates: Wednesday 31 August – Saturday 2 September 2022
  • Venue: ILT Stadium Southland, Invercargill – facemasks may be required by the venue.
  • Who: Senior A Basketball Team
  • Timetable: will be advised
  • Uniform requirements: SGHS Senior A basketball uniform, SGHS Activity Top, White ankle socks and sports shoes
  • Transport: students are to make their own way to and from the venue
  • Cost: $90.00 per player – full payment due by Tuesday 30 August 2022.

Basketball – Year 9-13 (Term 2/3)

Registrations for students in Years 9-13 are now open in the Sports Office. Please ensure you register your name before end of Term 1.  Any questions please speak with Mrs Huia or Mrs Gay in the Sports Office.

  • Dates: Friday 13 May – Friday 26 August (games are not played over the school holidays)
  • Venue: ILT Stadium Southland – Anyone not playing in a SGHS basketball team aged over 12 years and 3 months will require a valid My Vaccine Pass to enter the venue. 
  • Grades: Year 9 – 13 students
  • Times: Most games start from 4 pm – please check the weekly draw each week for game times.
  • Trials: 5 pm – 7 pm on the dates below at the SGHS Gym.
    • Trial 1: Monday 04 April
    • Trial 2: Wednesday 06 April
    • Trial 3: Friday 08 April
  • Training: to be confirmed.
  • Uniform: SGHS Basketball Uniform, sneakers. A mouthguard is compulsory and must be worn on court by all players.
  • Team Manager: is required for each team. If you are able to assist with this role please indicate this on the permission form and our Sports Office will be in contact with you. It is a requirement that all Team Managers/Coaches are Police Vetted prior to commencing this role. SGHS will provide these forms.
  • Cost: $85.00 per player – full payment due by Friday 06 May 2022.

Cricket

Year 7 – 9 Girls Smash Cricket

Girls Smash is aimed at growing participation in cricket for girls. The philosophy behind Girls Smash is that it is all about having fun and giving it a go. The best thing is that it’s playing with and against other girls and it doesn’t matter if they haven’t played before.  This is played in Term 1.

National Primary School Shield

This is a Twenty20 school-based competition for girls in Years 7 and 8.  The Otago/Southland competition commences in Term 1 with the winner progressing to the National Finals to be held in Term 4.

Year 9 – 13 Cricket (Gillette Venus Cup Competition)

The Otago/Southland competition commences in Term 1 with the winner progressing to the National Finals to be held in December in Palmerston North. All games are Twenty20.

The Otago winner is awarded the Bates Cup.

Cross Country

Y7/8 Southland Cross Country Champs

Congratulations to our qualifiers who have now progressed to attend the Southland Primary School Cross Country Champs.  Please read through the following information below and complete the permission form – due Thursday 16 June 2022.

  • Date: Friday 17 June
  • Time: Depart SGHS at 9:15 am – approx return to SGHS 2:15 pm
  • Venue: Southern Field Days Site, East Gore School, 575 Waimumu Road.
  • Who: Year 7/8 qualifiers
  • Transport: Please advise on the form if your child requires transport to the event.  There will be a school van operating for those students who require it.
  • Cost: no cost
  • Uniform Requirements: SGHS PE uniform, gym shoes (no sprigs, spikes or bare feet), Water bottle, Lunch/money (food vendors will be on-site), and warm clothing for before and after the race.
  • Other Information: Toilets are available with sufficient space for changing and there is shelter available at the Agri centre. No postponement unless the weather is extreme and will be posted to local radio stations and the Facebook page by 8 am.
  • Timetable: Students will need to arrive and gather in front of the speakers by 10.30 am and there will be an Officials meeting at 10.45 am.

Race Times: Approx only so please make sure competitors are beginning their preparations up to 30 mins before their event.

Cycling

South Island and National School Track Champs

SGHS students have the opportunity  to enter into the South Island and National School Track Champs held in Invercargill at the SIT Velodrome.  For your child to enter this event they must be a confident track cyclist.

  • Dates: Tuesday 11 October – Wednesday 12 October 2022 (during school holidays)
  • Venue: SIT Veldrome, Invercargill
  • Time: 10 am – 6 pm each day
  • Uniform requirements: appropriate cycling gear as required by Cycling NZ School rules and Cycling NZ Road & Track technical regulations. Riders may take their own track bikes to use.
  • Costs: $70 per rider – individual events (Derby, Keirin, Points race and Scratch race) / $40 per team/per event.  Entry Fees includes the $4 Cycling New Zealand Schools Levy. Full payment is due by Friday 30 September 2022.

Football

NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

SGHS will be entering the Senior A football team into the NZ Secondary Schools Football Tournament held at Logan Park in Dunedin.  For your child to attend this event please read through the following information below and complete the permission form – due by Wednesday 24 August 2022.

  • Date: Sunday 28 August – Friday 2 September 2022
  • Venue: Logan Park, North Dunedin
  • Accommodation: Dunedin Holiday Park
  • Time: To be confirmed
  • Who: SGHS Senior A Football team 1st XI
  • Transport: The team will travel to and from the venues in 2 x rental vans and a private car.  All drivers hold a valid full driver’s licence and have been police vetted prior to the trip commencing.
  • Uniform requirements: players will wear the SGHS playing strip provided by the school. Before games, the team are to wear their school activity top. Shin guards, football top and plain red socks to be worn while playing.
  • Supervisors: we have 2 staff members attending (Mr Eddie Peters and Mr Gordon Lamont) and 1 parent manager (Tara Smith).
  • Cost: The total cost of the trip is $460.00 per student.  Payment can be done in 3 instalments if required.  Full payment is due by Wednesday 24 August 2022.

YEAR 7/8 INDOOR FUTSAL – TERM 3

Southland Football is running their indoor futsal league in Term 3. There is 1 team of 6 students, with 5 a-side games.  Students will need to be at the Stadium 10 minutes prior to the start of their games.

  • Dates: Mondays, 1 August – 5 September 2022.
  • Venue: ILT Stadium Southland. The venue may require face masks.
  • Time: games are between 4 pm – 6 pm.  Players are responsible for checking the draw each week.
  • Uniform requirements: all players are to wear their school PE top, and plain navy blue shorts and Gym shoes (no boots please)
  • Cost: $42.00 per player – full payment due by Friday 29 July 2022.

SOUTHLAND FOOTBALL COLLEGE LEAGUE – TERM 2/3

If your child has registered to play football for Term 2/3 please read through the following and complete the permission form:

  • Dates: Wednesdays, 01 June – 17 August (not played over the school holidays)
  • Time: 2:15 pm – 6:30 pm (includes travel time). Kick off at 4 pm / Games finish at 5 pm.
  • Venues: varies each week: Northern Southland College, Central Southland College, James Hargest College, Verdon College and SGHS.
  • Who: Year 7 – 13 students.
  • Practices: Mondays, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm at SGHS Fields.  Full attendance is expected for all players for all teams.
  • Uniform: players are supplied a school football shirt and shorts. You must provide your own football boots, shin-pads and plain red football socks.
  • Transport: Travel will be in the SGHS school vans or hire van driven by Mr Peters, or Mr Lamont.
  • Cost: $70.00 per player – full payment due by Tuesday 31 May 2022.

SGHS Year 7/8 Gymnastics Club

We would like to welcome any Year 7 and 8 students to join our gymnastics club which will run in Term 3 2022.

If your child is interested in joining our club please read through the following information below and complete the permission form – due by Wednesday 27 July 2022.  

  • What:  Gymsport is gymnastics that caters for all levels from beginner to expert.  It involves individual activities and skill development as well as group interaction and presentation.
  • Who: This is for Year 7 and 8 students to participate. Senior students help run the sessions and coach the teams. Teachers will also assist with coaching and overall supervision and organisation.  Due to difficulties with covid, we will not enter teams into the Invercargill Gymsports Festival this year. 
  • Dates: Thursdays, 28 July – 29 September 2022
  • Times: 3:15 pm – 4:30 pm
  • Venue: SGHS Old Gym
  • Uniform: SGHS PE Gear

SGHS will be entering the Senior A Hockey team into the NZ Secondary School Hockey Tournament held at Ngā Puna Wai in Wigram, Christchurch. For your child to attend this tournament please read through the following information below and complete the permission form – due by Friday 19 August 2022.

  • Dates: Sunday 28 August – Friday 2 September 2022
  • Venue: Ngā Puna Wai, Christchurch
  • Time: to be confirmed
  • Who: SGHS Senior A Hockey Team
  • Cost: $706.00 per student – full payment is due by Friday 26 August 2022.

HOCKEY – Term 2/3

SGHS will be entering Year 7 – 13 Hockey teams into the Invercargill Hockey competition. The competition runs from May-August 2022.

  • DATES:
    • Senior C team: play on Monday afternoons/evenings. Games start on Monday 16 May 2022.
    • Senior A/B teams: play on Tuesday afternoons/evenings. Games start on Tuesday 17 May 2022.
    • Y7/8 Teams: play on Thursday afternoons. Games start on Thursday 19 May 2022.
    • Games are played in 2 x 25-minute halves.
  • COST: Full payment due by Friday 13 May 2022
    • Year 7/8 teams: $110.00 per player
    • All senior teams: $130.00 per player

Netball

Netball – South Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament

Our Senior A netball team will travel up to Timaru to compete at the SISS Netball Tournament. The team will play over 4 days indoors at Aorangi Stadium. For your child to attend this trip, please read through the following information below and complete the permission form – due by Wednesday 24 August 2022.

  • Dates: Sunday 28 August – Friday 2 September 2022
  • Venue: Accommodation; Northpark Motel / Netball Venue; Aorangi Stadium, Timaru.
  • Time: Depart Invercargill at 8:00 am from SGHS, ETA to Timaru 3:00 pm / Return to SGHS on 2 Sept approx. 3:00 pm.
  • Transport: all staff and players will be transported in the SGHS school van to and from the venue.  The van will be driven by our Sports Director, Mrs Jess Huia. Face-masks must be worn by all staff and students while travelling inside the van.
  • Uniform requirements: SGHS Senior A uniform, Black or Navy Spanx shorts, white ankle socks, netball shoes, named drink bottle.
  • Other Information: Mrs Huia will provide further information about the tournament via email to the players parents/caregivers. Spectators are most welcome to attend and watch the games.
  • Cost: $700.00 per player – full payment due by Wednesday 24 August 2022.

Netball – St Margaret’s Netball Exchange

Our Senior A netball team will travel up to Dunedin to play an inter-school exchange game against St Margaret’s Senior A netball team. For your child to attend this trip, please read through the following information below and complete the permission form – due by Friday 5 August 2022.

  • Date: Sunday 7 August 2022
  • Venue: St Hilda’s Collegiate School, 2 Cobden Street, Dunedin
  • Time: Depart Invercargill at 11 am for arrival in Dunedin at 1:30 pm.
    • Students are to meet at SGHS Enwood Boarding House at 10:45 am, the van will depart at 11 am.
    • Van will depart Dunedin at approx. 4 pm/arrival into Invercargill at approx. 7 pm – returning to Enwood Boarding House.
  • Transport: all staff and players will be transported in the SGHS school van to and from the venue.  The van will be driven by our Sports Director, Mrs Jess Huia. Facemasks must be worn by all staff and students while travelling inside the van.
  • Uniform requirements: SGHS Senior A uniform, Black or Navy Spanx shorts, white ankle socks, netball shoes, named drink bottle.
  • Cost: no cost
  • Other information: spectators are most welcome to watch the game.

Netball – Year 7/8 Festival

We have two teams entered into the Year 7/8 Festival this year.

  • Date: Wednesday 3 August 2022
  • Venue: ILT Stadium Southland.
  • Who: Year 7/8 students
  • Transport: all students must make their own way to and from the venue.
  • Draw: click HERE for the draw.  First game will start at 9:30am with the last game at 2pm.
  • Uniform: The theme for this year’s festival is RAINBOW. Dress up in one colour or multiple.
  • Cost: $5.00 per player – please pay cash to Mrs Gay when you arrive at the stadium.
  • Other info: games will be 10 minutes each way with 2 minutes half time. Teams are responsible for supplying an umpire, scorer and timekeeper for each game.
  • Please ensure your child brings plenty of food and water for the day. Students are to meet their coaches in the foyer 30 minutes before your first game of the day.

Netball 2022

SGHS will be entering Year 7/8 and Year 9-13 Netball teams into the Invercargill Netball Centre competition. The competition runs from April to August and is held on Saturdays at ILT Stadium Southland. Please read through the following information below, and complete the permission form by Thursday 14 April 2022.

  • Grading Games Dates:
    • Open Grades: Saturday 30 April 2022
    • Secondary School / Year 7-8: Saturday 14 May and Sunday 15 May 2022
  • Start Date: first round of Netball begins Saturday 21 May 2022, 8:30 am

  • Team Manager: We do require Team Managers for each netball team. If this is something you would be interested in for the full season, please indicate this on the permission form below, and Mrs Huia will be in contact with you. Police Vetting is a requirement for all Team Managers before we can place you in this role for the school. SGHS will provide these forms.
  • Uniform Requirements: Players are responsible for the weekly cleaning of their uniforms.  All uniforms must be returned cleaned, to the Sports Office after the netball season has finished.

    • White ankle socks
    • Netball shoes/sneakers
    • No earrings, No jewellery and No piercings are to be worn by players
    • Uniforms will be issued to the following teams:
      • Senior A, Senior B, Eagles, Dynamite, 10A, and 9A
    • All other teams not listed above are to wear their SGHS PE Top and a plain red netball skirt. Netball skirts can be purchased from Student Services for a fee – please contact Student Services to purchase.

Squash

Squash Whack n Run – Term 4

Squash Southland is excited to offer a fun after-school squash programme, Whack n Run, which is for Year 7-8 and Year 9/10 students only and will start in Term 4. This will run for 6 weeks at ILT Stadium Southland.  Numbers are limited to enter.  Everyone who plays should be able to hit a ball against a wall to themselves a few times. Students will play against similar abilities wherever possible. 

  • Dates:
    • Year 7/8: Wednesdays start 26 October for 6 weeks
    • Year 9 – 13: Thursdays start 27 October for 6 weeks
  • Venue: ILT Stadium Southland.
  • Time: 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm
  • Equipment required: Balls, Racquets and eyewear are supplied.
  • Uniform requirements: School PE uniform to be worn and non-marking sneakers.

Touch Rugby

Touch Rugby – Term 4 (Year 7 – 13)

  • Dates: Played on Thursdays, game times are between 4 pm – 6 pm, played at Turnbull Thompson Park.  The season starts on 20 October and runs for 4 weeks in double round robin format. (8 games in total).
  • Who: Year 7/8 grade, Year 9/10 grade and Senior Mixed Grade.
  • Uniform requirements: SGHS PE Uniform / Issued playing uniform / sneakers or touch shoes to be worn while playing.
  • Draw: will be available each week on the Touch Southland website – click HERE

  • Coaches/Managers: we do require Coaches and Managers for each team which will be a roster system each week.  Please indicate this on the permission form if you are able to assist.

Indoor Girls Touch Tag Y7-13

Our students have the opportunity to enter the weekly competition which is run over 6 weeks in Term 3.  Please read through the following information below and complete the permission form due by Friday 29 July 2022.

  • Dates: Tuesdays, 2 August – 6 September
  • Times: 4 pm – 6 pm. Game duration will be 2 x 12 minute halves.
  • Venue: ILT Stadium – face masks may be required by the venue.
  • Who: Year 7 – 13 students
  • Cost: $10.00 entry fee per player – full payment due by Friday 29 July 2022.
    • Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.
  • Uniform requirements: SGHS PE Uniform/Activity Top, sneakers.
  • Transport: all players are to make their own way to the games.
  • Other Information: Same rules apply as in Touch but modified to a 4 a side game with velcro tags to rip instead of touch. Teams may have 5 – 6 players for rolling subs. All teams require a coach who will also referee the match.  If you are interested in coaching/managing a team please indicate this on the form below. Touch Southland will provide whistles which will be used for the entire competition.

Triangular Exchange

INTERSCHOOL EXCHANGE

SGHS will be attending the annual Triangular Interschool Exchange with OGHS and WGHS in Dunedin. Due to Covid, this has been cancelled for the previous 2 years.

Please read through the following information below and complete the permission form – due by Wednesday 10 August 2022

  • Date: Friday 12 August 2022
  • Venue: Otago Girls’ High School, 41 Tennyson Street / Logan Park, North Dunedin
  • Time: Depart SGHS at 6:15 am  / Return to SGHS at 6:00 pm approx. All students are to meet at SGHS (Tweed St Entrance), at 6 am with all their gear. We will depart Dunedin at 3 pm.
  • Who: Year 9-13 students
  • Transport: all staff and students involved will be transported to the venues by bus and minivans. Facemasks must be worn while travelling inside the bus and minivans.
  • Uniform requirements: Students are to be in full winter uniform with a blazer while travelling to the event. Students are to bring their SGHS sports uniforms with them.
  • Cost: $35.00 per student – full payment is due by Wednesday 10 August 2022.

  • Dates: Wednesdays, starting 7 September – competition runs for 6 weeks. Draw will be made available each week on the Volleyball Southland website.
  • Venue: ILT Stadium Southland

  • Time: games are between 4 pm – 8 pm
  • Who: SGHS Year 7 – 13 students
  • Uniform requirements: SGHS PE Uniform, gym shoes
  • Cost: $42.00 per student – full payment due by Monday 5 September 2022.

Water Polo

Water Polo – Term 1

SGHS will be entering Year 7/8 and Year 9-13 Waterpolo teams into the Southland Waterpolo Secondary School competition. The competition runs across 8 weeks and is held on Friday afternoons at Splash Palace Pool. Note this competition is entered in Term 1 and Term 4. Teams selected at trials this month will carry across both terms.

  • Start Date: Friday 18 February 2022 (games on 25 March – cancelled)
  • Grades: Year 7/8 Teams and Senior A/B Teams
  • Competition Info: All games will be held at Splash Palace. It is the student’s responsibility to transport to and from the games.
  • Times of games:
    • Year 7/8: 3:30 pm – 6 pm
    • Senior B: 3:30 pm – 6 pm
    • Senior A: 7:30 pm – 9 pm
  • Uniform: Togs/Towel
  • Cost: $40.00 per player – full payment due by Thursday 17 February 2022.  An additional entry fee to enter the pool each week is required by Splash Palace.
