Southland Girls' High School has entered Te Hautonga (senior) and Nga Putangitangi (junior) kapa haka competitions since 2011.
In 2011 we entered as Whakangahau in Te Hautonga as our combined Girls' High/Boys' High group had been on hiatus for some years. However, feedback from the judges was encouraging and we entered competitively in 2013.
Our junior group has enjoyed success at Nga Putangitangi winning first place in the poi (senior section) for 2011, 2012 and 2013, as well as first place in the kaitataki kotiro (Elisapeta Kuresa) as well.
In 2012 we were also placed first equal in the whakawatea. In 2013, some of our tuakana took a lead with our junior group. Tiana Nikora-Chalmers and Lesley Neho played key roles in choreographing and writing the poi, while Hinewai Collins and Ana Salesa-Henry consistently assisted at practices.
The name given to our combined group is Te Ara Hou ki Mua. Our kapa haka is ably and passionately supported by staff but we welcome input and support from whÄnau and the door is always open to those who wish to support in some way.
