Performing Arts Logo

Our Performing Arts curriculum reinforces the tradition of excellence in Dance, Drama and Music.

Girls have the scope to explore and develop their talents and creativity, engaging in performance and achieving personal excellence.

The following activities are just some of the things we do.

  • An audition entry choir for Year 7 and 8 students: auditions are held at the beginning of Term 2 and involve singing in a group situation.
  • Commitment for Terms 2 – 4 is expected
  • Rosso performs at Open Night, ILT Invercargill Schools’ Sing Out (soon to be rebranded), in the community, assemblies and Prizegiving.

  • A non-auditioned Year 9 to 13 Choir
  • The choir is a year-long obligation.
  • Sanguine performs at the NZCF Big Sing Competition, at Open Night, assemblies and Prizegiving.

  • FEMME is our elite choir.
  • Audition Entry: auditions are held in Term 4 for current FEMME members as well as girls who already attend SGHS. Students new to SGHS audition in the first two weeks of Term 1.
  • The audition involves preparing an unaccompanied solo item, as well as having some ear tests and singing another song, such as the National Anthem.
  • The choir involves a year-long obligation for its members. Each year members must re-audition for their position in the choir.
  • FEMME members must participate in weekly sectionals and it is desirable for them to have individual voice lessons, either privately or through the Itinerant Music Programme.
  • Femme performs at Open Night, NZCF Big Sing, in the community, assemblies, Colours and Prizegiving.
  • FEMME has been to three consecutive NZCF Big Sing National Finales attaining a Silver in 2017, Bronze in 2018 and Bronze again in 2019.

FEMME 2020

  • Itinerant lessons are offered in Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Guitar, Piano, Vocal as well as Drums and Percussion.
  • There is a charge for material used in lessons.
  • These are added to your school account and cover materials and repairs. There is a separate charge for students who need to hire an instrument.

This event happens in Term 2. Advanced musicians who are keen to be part of an ensemble should look at this as a platform to showcase their skills and work with other musicians. NCEA students can use this as part of their group performance work. Support to assist in selecting music and preparation will be given by the Itinerant teachers.

Available to Year 9 – 13 students enthusiastic about performing Shakespeare with a modernised twist. SGHS enters a 5- minute student directed piece in the competition each year. This event takes place in the first term. Rehearsals are in students’ own time.

Smokefree Rockquest is an annual music competition for intermediate and high school bands throughout New Zealand, held in Term 2. Students interested can approach the HOD of Music.

Each year the Drama and Dance Captain offer lunchtime activities in:

  • Drama Games and Theatre Sports – This is for Year 7-9 students and begins once a week from Term 2. Information will be in the notices.
  • Dance  - Once a week, the Dance captain will run an open dance session for years 7 - 13. More information will be available in the notices.

  • Southland Girls’ High and Southland Boys’ High alternate responsibility for the Junior and Senior Production each year.
  • Students are notified of auditions through the school notices and all audition materials can be accessed through a website.

Show Quest

This is a national performing arts competition where students create, produce and perform an original theatrical performance consisting of student-designed and created content, which is presented in a choreographed and themed mini-spectacular. Showquest also features soundtracks, live music, choreography, dance and wearable art. Our Showquest team is led by a group of senior students and is open to years 7 - 13. The performance is usually held in May at the Civic Theatre.

  • This is held annually to showcase and assess NCEA Senior Dance students. This includes students from outside the dance programme.

  • This is an opportunity for experienced players to play in a group situation.
  • Jazz Band performs at the Jazz Festival in October
