Sporting Activities

It’s been a full on month with a lot of sporting activities across Southland! Here are some great results from our SGHS students in the recent weeks of Cross Country, Indoor Bowls, Swimming, Orienteering& Road Cycling.
Southland Secondary Schools Cross Country in Te Anau – 15th May
Year 9 Girls – Pippa J placed 4th, Syvia H placed 6th, Amya S placed 20th. Year 9 Teams SGHS placed 2nd overall.
Over 16 Girls – Jorgia T placed 3rd.
Southland Secondary Schools Indoor Bowls Tournament in Invercargill – 16th May
Two Y9 teams competed – Sierra B + Elly H placed 3rd, Kaylee N + Ruby H placed 18th. SGHS placed 3rd overall.
Southland Secondary Schools Swimming Champs in Invercargill – 19th May
Y7&8 students – Adelynn A, Aleah B, Charlotte H, Lexi D, Olivia D, Rio K
Y9&10 students – Ana P (2nd Breaststroke, 2nd Freestyle), Cadence G, Lucy M, Shanna-Beth S
Y11-13 students – Emmerson D (2nd Backstroke, 3rd Breaststroke, 2nd Butterfly, 2nd Freestyle) , Olivia B (2nd Breaststroke)
Relay teams did well:
Y11-18 200 Medley Relay SGHS placed 2nd – Olivia B, Cadence G, Ana P, Emmerson D
Y11-13 200 Medley Relay SGHS placed 2nd – Adelynn A, Lexi D, Aleah B, Rio K
Y11-13 200 Freestyle Relay SGHS placed 2nd – Rio K, Aleah B, Charlotte H, Lexi D
Southland Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs in Invercargill – 19th May
Six Y7&8 teams competed – Daisy C + Kadi C placed 4th, Molly M + Olivia M placed 6th, Tahlie R + Charlotte W placed 7th, Charlotte S + Adelynn A placed 10th, Laykyn A + Indi M placed 13th, Tilly P + Sophia T placed 15th
One Y9 competed individually – Ava S placed 4th.
Otago/Southland Secondary Schools Road Cycling Champs in Invercargill – 22nd May
U19 Women category – Lucy G placed 1st in both Time Trial and Road Race events. Lucy then combined with a Columba College student to form a composite team who were not eligible for placings but rode with the fastest time of 04:24.769 in the schools’ team trial U20G category.
South Island Cross Country Festival in Timaru – 26th May
Y8 Girls category – Charlotte H placed 1st. Participated in a mixed relay team placed 1st.
Well done to all of the girls and all their efforts.

RISKS Disclosure

Weekly sports contains risks, including common injuries like strains, sprains, bruises and dislocations. These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in your child facing disciplinary actions on their return or sent home at the cost of the Whanau/parents or caregivers.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

I understand that sports, trips, and extra-curricular activities are opportunities for me to learn, practice skills, and gain attitudes and values in an environment outside of the school.  I realise that this requires me to take on genuine responsibility for my own enjoyment and safety and that of others.

I agree to do the following to make this happen:

  • Show courtesy and consideration to others.
  • Follow the rules and instructions of staff and other supervisors at the events.
  • Look after myself and my personal belongings.
  • Declare medical conditions that could affect participation in the events.
  • Accept the rules set by the school for the events.
  • Take part in all activities within ‘challenge-by-choice’ options

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
  • My actions put me or others in any danger.

Come and see all that Southland Girls’ High School offers students with a school tour that allows you to see our facilities in action, while meeting the staff and the students.

Student tour guides will answer questions and offer a student’s perspective, before meeting with a senior member of staff to discuss your child’s enrolment.
