‘Once a SGHS girl, Always a SGHS girl’
At Southland Girls’ High School we are very fortunate to have the support of Old Girls’ Associations. They have been stalwarts of the school for over 100 years and have branches in Southland, Otago an Wellington.
The Old Girls’ Association has given us many treasures in and around the school, such as a beautiful statue of Rebecca in the school foyer, the lectern in the West Hall and numerous other art treasures. But more importantly, they are unfailing in their loyalty to the school.
We often say “once a Girls’ High girl, always a Girls’ High girl.” (You never ever lose the feeling of belonging.)
And in this day and age when things are constantly changing, the Old Girls Association are a blessing.
The most recent celebration of this Association was the 100-year anniversary of the Southland Old Girls’ Association. Prior to this, there was a celebration of the 125-year anniversary, and the move from the original Forth Street building to the ‘new’ school in Tweed Street, celebrated in 1998 on the 50th anniversary of the ‘Great Trek’.

In December 2020, SGHS launched an exciting new initiative to celebrate the history and tradition of our school with the introduction of our Generational Badges.
New and current students at SGHS receive a badge to celebrate which generation of their whānau they represent. They receive this badge once their Annual Student Utility Fee is paid.
If purchasing for someone other than a current student – the cost is $6.00 per badge, payable to Student Services by cash only. (If a new or current student loses their badge, they will need to purchase a new one).
