Year 9 Day Out Activities 2024

As part of our Year 9 Education Outside the Classroom programme your child has the opportunity to participate in one day tasters of group activities and games around Invercargill. This year the options available are:

Minigolf, Lasertag & Trampolining at Jump’n’Fun- $42

Students will walk to Jump’n’Fun and spend the morning rotating through the different activities they have on offer – minigolf, laser tag, and trampolining. After lunch students will head back to school for their afternoon classes.

Orienteering & Frisbee Golf at Queens Park – $5

Students will walk to Queens Park and learn some orienteering skills before heading out in groups to complete the Queens Park orienteering course. After they’ve got their bearings, they’ll then have a go at the Frisbee Golf course before finishing with a choice between lunch outside or at the Cheeky Llama and then heading back to school for their afternoon classes.

After registrations close students will be allocated to a session between Thursday November 21st and Wednesday November 27th. Student interest will determine how many sessions there are of each activity and which days they run.  Each day will run within usual school hours. Students will depart SGHS at 9:00am and return between 1 and 3pm. Students will be walking to and from school and the venue.

Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

Gear Requirements

  • Orienteering/Frisbee Golf Only = Cellphone
  • Comfortable, practical clothing suitable for physical activities
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Day pack
  • Lunch and food for the day
  • Closed toe footwear suitable for walking around town and parks
  • Any personal medication
  • Drink Bottle

These events contain risks, including accidents with traffic, injuries during physical activities, and from being in public places. These risks will be managed through planning and communication, including use of personal protective equipment and the choice of sites that give students a suitable level of challenge. This event is managed school staff (supported for some activities by venue staff) who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.

Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in them being removed from the activity and restricted access to future opportunities.

Weekly sports contains risks, including common injuries like strains, sprains, bruises and dislocations. These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. I understand that sports, trips, and extra-curricular activities are opportunities for me to learn, practice skills, and gain attitudes and values in an environment outside of the school.  I realise that this requires me to take on genuine responsibility for my own enjoyment and safety and that of others.

I agree to do the following to make this happen:

  • Show courtesy and consideration to others.
  • Follow the rules and instructions of staff and other supervisors at the events.
  • Look after myself and my personal belongings.
  • Declare medical conditions that could affect participation in the events.
  • Accept the rules set by the school for the events.
  • Take part in all activities within ‘challenge-by-choice’ options

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
  • My actions put me or others in any danger.
