Year 12 Agribusiness Southland Field Tour – Te Anau – 9-10 April 2025

The year 12 Agribusiness class have an exciting opportunity to experience a variety of agribusinesses in action.  The first day of our tour is a packed day visiting Whare Creek Station and Duncragin Angus Cattle Stud in the Te Anau Basin. They will be hosting the Level 2 Agribusiness class showcasing what they do and how they futureproof their business. We will be hearing from variety of different staff on these properties including farm managers, workers, owners as well as local PGG Wrightsons stock agent and Paul Rudd from Resolution Farm App. The girls will be gathering important information and strategies that this business uses such as environmental, technological, social and legal which will be used for the girls future proofing 4 credit internal as well as external end of year exam.

The girls will stay overnight at Te Anau Downs Lodge and then on the second day will be hosted by the Kepler Mountain View Alpacas who will talk to us about their operation, the girls will get to see the alpacas up close and personal, witness alpacas being shorn and hear about what they do with the fibres. Then we will head to Daavar and Co where they will learn about this family business how they got started and how they future proof themselves as well as respond to societal influences, environment, technology and new legislation pressures. They will also get a catered lunch from Sprig and Thistle while at Daavar. The girls will also use these businesses for their future proofing internal and external exam.

A more detailed itinerary with times will be provided to the girls closer to the time.

Date: Meet at front of school at 9th April 2025 at 7.45am leaving 8am sharp and return to school by 3.10pm on the 10th April 2025

Transport: Students will be travelling via vans and one GO Bus Van

Clothing: Students are required to wear tidy casual clothing that is warm (layers are ideal, and wear a high vis vest whilst we are at the businesses. Gumboots are compulsory footwear requirement on this trip due to the nature of properties we are visiting. The girls are also required to have hair tied up off their face.

Food: Students need to bring a packed lunch for the first day and then money for dinner in Te Anau and either own lunch for the following day or money to purchase lunch at the Sprig and Thistle (dietaries are catered for).

Accommodation: Te Anau Downs Campus 2681 Te Anau – Milford Sound Highway

Costs: $200. Please pay and complete the permission form below by Wednesday 26 March 2025

This event contains risks, including being around  a variety of animals and walking around a working farm.  This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes wearing high vis vests at all times while we are there, students are not to be on their phones while we are on site and need to be aware of the machinery, vehicles and animals within the farm.  While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.  If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Kate Gilchrist at [email protected] or 03 211 6030.

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in the parents being contacted and asked to be collected and removed from the field trip. It would also mean they are at risk of not being chosen to attend other field trips in the future.

Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.
