Y9 Borland Lodge Camps

In 2024 our Year 9 students will be going off on camp to Borland Lodge. This camp is focused on providing students a taste of outdoor and nature based recreation, helping them become more familiar with the Academic Tutor Teacher and their AT class, and helping students reflect on themselves and who they want to be. Whilst we encourage all students to attend it is not compulsory and students who are not able to attend will be expected to be at school attending classes.

Dates: Camp One = Sun June 16 to Wed June 19 (9MS, 9KL, 9PG, TMK)

Camp Two = Wed June 19 to Sat June 22 (9MP, 9PS, 9AL, AIGA)

Departure: Students are to arrive at school by 9:00am on the first day of their camp (Sunday or Wednesday). Buses and vans depart at 9:30am

Return: Students are estimated to arrive back at school around 2:30pm on the final day of their camp (Wednesday or Saturday)

Transport: Students will be transported to and from camp by bus, and vans. The vans will also be used on site to shuttle students to and from some camp. Vehicles will be driven by either SGHS staff members or Adventure Southland Instructors.

Venue: Students will be sleeping at Borland Lodge and activities will be at or nearby. Borland Lodge is at 347 Borland Road, Monowai. Phone: 03 225 5464 Email: manager@borlandlodge.co.nz

Costs: full payment due by Monday 3 June 2024.$345.00 per student – this covers transport, accommodation, food, instructors, necessary equipment, and other incidental costs.

Food: Please ensure to inform of us of any dietary requirements on this registration form. If need be, we will contact you to discuss these requirements further.

Activities: Students will take part in a range of activity rotations each day, as well as some whole year activities. These may vary depending on weather or other situational requirements. Activities include:

  • Kayaking
  • Hiking
  • Ultimate Archery
  • Low Ropes Course
  • Outdoor Cooking

Please Note: School procedures is full payment must be received by the due date for your child to be eligible to attend camp. If the payment and permission form is not completed by the due date your child will be withdrawn from attending camp. Once payment has been made and camp has commenced there will be no refunds.  Please Note: All payments will be allocated to any unpaid fees and charges on your child’s account first.

This event contains risks, including drowning, hypothermia, and falls/sprains. This will be managed through planning and communication, including use of personal protective equipment, instruction on safe techniques, and the choice of sites that give students a suitable level of challenge. This event is jointly managed by Adventure Southland and school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. Adventure Southland instructors are qualified and trained in the activities they lead and they follow best practices for all activities, as well as adding a critical layer of risk management. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.

These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. I understand that sports, trips, and extra-curricular activities are opportunities for me to learn, practice skills, and gain attitudes and values in an environment outside of the school.  I realise that this requires me to take on genuine responsibility for my own enjoyment and safety and that of others.

I agree to do the following to make this happen:

  • Show courtesy and consideration to others.
  • Follow the rules and instructions of staff and other supervisors at the events.
  • Look after myself and my personal belongings.
  • Declare medical conditions that could affect participation in the events.
  • Accept the rules set by the school for the events.
  • Take part in all activities within ‘challenge-by-choice’ options

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
  • My actions put me or others in any danger.
