At Southland Girls’ High, students are offered opportunities regularly that really open do open up a world of possibilities when it comes to career pathways.
Year 9 student, Sophie was invited by the NZ Embassy to see if she would like to participate in the final deployment of the NASA SOFIA (The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) when it was in Christchurch recently.
With the programme coming to a close, the team at NASA were keen to connect with young New Zealanders who have an interest in Aerospace and STEM opportunities.
Having previously been involved with the “Women in Space” programme last year, it was an excited and grateful Sophie who spent the day in Christchurch being a part of the “Day in the Life of NASA SOFIA” experience.
Being able to tour the plane, meet the team, sit in on a Mission briefing, and experience what it is like to work as a scientist on NASA SOFIA was an incredible experience for Sophie who had nothing but praise for the NASA team and the opportunity.
On behalf of Sophie and SGHS, a huge thank you to both the team at the NZ Embassy and NASA.
