Ski Trip – Coronet Peak 10 August 2024

For further information please refer to the Southland Girls High School will be offering a day ski/snowboard trip to Coronet Peak Ski Field on Saturday 10 August 2024 for interested students from Year 7 to 13.  The cost will cover transport to and from Southland Girls High School to the Coronet Ski field, a lift pass, ski/snowboard rental and a three-hour lesson with experienced NZ ski instructors.  This is a great opportunity to try out a new sport, see our amazing country and gain confidence in either skiing or snowboarding.  We an only take 42 students on the bus so any students who pay after this will be placed on a waiting list.  We will then get in touch with you to confirm if you have a spot on the bus.  Also, we need 35 students for the trip to go ahead.  We will confirm this two weeks prior to the ski trip commencing.

  • Dates: Saturday 10 August 2024
  • Transport: GOBus Coachlines.
      • Departs school 5:25 am 
      • Returns to school at approximately 6.30 pm.
        Students wishing to be collected or dropped off at a different point must give a signed note to the teacher in charge of the ski trip at the ski meeting prior to the trip.
  • Equipment Hire: Students need to be aware if that rental ski or snowboard equipment is lost or damaged they may be liable to pay part costs towards replacement of that equipment.
  • Food: You can bring snacks, lunch and a drink bottle or bring money to purchase food from the ski field.
  • Clothing: Mufti, warm suitable clothing for skiing, eg; waterproof jacket, ski pants, warm clothing, waterproof gloves/mittens, sunglasses/goggles, sunscreen, spare socks. A limited amount of gear can be hired from the school by paying a bond of $20 which will be returned once the gear is returned.  A helmet is provided as a part of the ski/snowboard package.  All students must wear a helmet while skiing/snowboarding.  Failure to do so will mean that students will not be allowed to ski/snowboard that day.  Please indicate on the permission form below if your child does require to hire gear from SGHS
  • Cost: $220.00 per student  full payment due as soon as possible to secure your spot.
    • This includes, bus transport, a three hour lesson, ski rental, and lift pass.
    • Lessons: For safety, all students must take the lesson, which is arranged so that students are skiing/snowboarding at their correct ability level.     • Students wont be supervised closely whilewhile on the mountain skiing. Will travel in groups of 2-3 and have access to a cellphone.
    • Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

This event contains risks, including impact injuries while skiing and travelling. Students won’t be supervised closely on the ski field, so students are asked to ski in group of 3 or more with cellphones, so they can contact the lead teacher if there is an issue. This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes careful consideration of all procedures while carrying out the activities.  Listen carefully to NZ Ski instructors.  While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.  If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Mel Young.

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in your child needing picked up by a parent or caregiver.

Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.   • Show courtesy and consideration to others.
  • Follow the rules and instructions of staff and other supervisors at the events.
  • Look after myself and my personal belongings.
  • Declare medical conditions that could affect participation in the events.
  • Accept the rules set by the school for the events.
  • Take part in all activities within ‘challenge-by-choice’ options

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
  • My actions put me or others in any danger.
