Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke Edinburgh Trip To Motorau Hut, 20 Sept 2024

Dates: Leave SGHS 9.00 am  20 September 2024 , return SGHS 5pm 21 September  2024  

Transport: SGHS / Hostel Van and school trailer  

Staff: Ms Sue Mattingly, Miss Kate Gilchrist, Mr John Grogan. They all have experience tramping and with first aid. A parent would be helpful to assist with the student to teacher ratios. Venue: Motorau Hut Fiordland National Park near Manapouri 

Gear List:  Click HERE. Warm clothing is appropriate eg polyprops, thermals etc. Cotton is not appropriate to be worn as this is cold when wet. 

  • We may stop for an ice cream on the way home, so students may bring either a small amount of cash or an eftpos card. 
  • Phones are permitted on the tramp for photographic purposes (there is no cell reception) and for contacting whanau when we are nearing drop off locations. 

This event contains risks, including hypothermia, injury, getting lost and being on an outdoor activity.  This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes careful training and planning for students and having experienced staff as well as a good adult to student ratio. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.  If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Sue Mattingly on 03 2116030 or [email protected]

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in being sent home, parents will be responsible for any extra costs incurred for this. 

In preparation for the above tramp we have the following events happening. 

Seaward Bush Walk in preparation for the upcoming Bronze Duke of Ed tramp to Fiordland National Park, we are offering the students a training walk.

Date: 28 August 2024, 4.00pm-5.30pm

Transport: own transport.

Bluff Hill fitness practice in preparation for the upcoming Silver and Gold Duke of Ed tramps to Fiordland National Park, we are offering the students 2 training walks. For those that are new to the Duke of Edinburgh Programme and doing the Gold award it is compulsory to attend these training sessions. Transport: SGHS Hostel Van/School Van. Note:  Ms Mattingly may use her vehicle depending on numbers instead of the school van.  Students will depart from SGHS and return to SGHS for pickup.

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
  • My actions put me or others in any danger.
