The Southland Branch of Engineering New Zealand in collaboration with Great South’s Southland Youth Futures programme welcome students to attend the Professional Engineering Day Out – a fun and engaging experience where students will learn about Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, and Geotechnical Engineering. There will be interactive activities and a Q & A employers and graduates. If you have received this letter your child has indicated their interest in this event or this career pathway, and would like to attend.

Time/Date: 10am – 1pm, Thursday 19 September 2024
Travel: Depart 9.50am, return 1.10pm
Transport: Students will be transported to and from event by Go Bus
Clothing: Students to wear school uniform
Cost: No cost
Venue: Hansen Hall, Southern Institute of Technology
Additional: Lunch will be provided, students need to advise of any dietary requirements. SGHS will be one of several schools taking part in this event
The purpose of the event is for students to see what a career in engineering looks like, discover disciplines of professional engineering and pathways into each area. It will also be a good opportunity for students to network with employers and understand where their degree can take them and what the world of work looks like once they have qualified.
Students can bring their bags with them, they can be stored at SIT however it would be recommended that the keep anything of value or personal significance at home, just to be safe. As this is a school event students are not permitted to use their phones will onsite at SIT. Please ensure all health information is up to date in EDGE. Students will be supervised by myself and Great South staff.
This event may contain some risks including, but not limited to, trying on space suits and working together as part of a team to make a bridge using household items. This event is supervised by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, and all risks will be outlined to the students before starting any of the activities. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in students being returned to school.
