Matariki Sports Festival

✨ This week and until the end of this Term SGHS is celebrating Matariki (start of Maori New Year), various classrooms will be doing their own form of celebration and our senior Te Reo Maori class will be travelling to Wellington for a few days, to continue their studies in Maori culture and language. Keep an eye on our page for updates on this.

To kick off the celebrations, yesterday Mrs Huia had the privilege of taking our students down to attend the Matariki Traditional Sports Day at the ILT Stadium Southland. 140 students from 7 different secondary schools attended.

The girls rotated around 6 stations that involved playing Ki O rahi, Poi Toa, Pani, Maurakau, Tapu ae, Cook Island Drummers and Traditional Dance. These are a mix of Maori, Fijian and Pacific island Games.

Our students really enjoyed this day and had a great time participating in the various games.
