As part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, students have the opportunity to attend a trip to Kiwiburn Hut in Mavora, working towards their bronze award. Please read through the following information below and complete the permission, payment and health form by Friday 11 August 2023.

- Date: Friday 18 August – Saturday 19 August 2023
- Times: Friday – Depart SGHS 12:15 pm / Saturday – return to SGHS 5:00 pm
- Venue: Kiwiburn Hut. Mavora Department of Conversation (Click HERE for location information)
- Who: Duke of Edinburgh students, Year 9 – 11.
- Cost: $100.00 per student – full payment due by Friday 11 August 2023.
- Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.
- Transport: all students and staff attending will be transported by the school vans. Driven by our staff.
- Staff attending: Mr John Grogan and Ms Sue Mattingly and one parent will assist with the group too.
- Clothing/ Equipment List: Click HERE to view the gear list. If there are any items on this list that you do not have please let Ms Mattingly know asap. Warm clothing is appropriate eg: polyprops, thermals etc. Cotton is not appropriate to be worn as this is cold when wet.
- Other information: Phones are permitted on the tramp for photographic purposes (There is no cell reception) and for contacting whanau when we are nearing drop off locations
This event contains risks, including hypothermia, injury, getting lost. This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful training and planning for students and having experienced staff as well as a good adult to student ratio. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in being sent home, parents will be responsible for any extra costs incurred for this.
