2021 Young Reporters for the Environment – Litter Less Competition

At SGHS we have many different opportunities for our Junior School, one of these is the Media Mash Club. The Great Southern Media Mash is an initiative to inspire, motivate and help Southern schools grow and develop their digital skills.

Recently the students had an opportunity to enter the Keep New Zealand Beautiful “2021 Young Reporters for the Environment – Litter Less” Competition.

Press Release from KNZB:
“Students were asked to investigate an environmental issue with a focus on minimising plastic waste, research a solution and then report on it using film, photography or writing. They were then asked to disseminate their piece via available channels such as their school newsletter, in a class presentation or by contacting local media.
The New Zealand YRE Jury, which comprises 5 experts in the fields of journalism, photography and environmental sustainable development, held an online panel in the first week of September to review the submissions and determine the winners. YRE Judge, Melissa Chan-Green said, “There were some great story angles and ideas explored through the YRE project this year and encouraging to see so many budding young journalists!”
Year 8 students Sophie Ineson and Shakayla Brown entered the competition. We are pleased to announce that Sophie has taken out 1st place in the following categories!
🥇 Photograph 11 – 14 years: Our Actions, Our Future (see winning photo below)
🥇 Video 11 – 14 years: Taking Action with Citizen Science (click on the link to view her winning video)

As a school, we love to see our students excel in their passions. This is certainly something Sophie has shown once again with these outstanding results. Keep it up Sophie! 😊 and well done to Shakayla Brown for her high-quality entry on Plastic Pollution.
