As part of our Year 9 & 10 Education Outside the Classroom programme your child has the opportunity to participate in one day tasters of group activities in and around Invercargill. This year the options available to both Year 9s or Year 10s are:
Orienteering & Disc Golf at Queens Park – $5
Students will walk to Queens Park and learn some orienteering skills before heading out in groups to complete the Queens Park orienteering course. After they’ve got their bearings, they’ll then have a go at the Frisbee Golf course before finishing with lunch outside and then heading back to school for their afternoon classes.
Table Top Gaming at SGHS – $5
Students will spend the day at SGHS learning and playing a variety of different tabletop games including Role Playing Games like Dungeons & Dragons, and modern board and card games.
Bushcraft Skills at Dunsdale Reserve – $96
Students will spend the day at Dunsdale Recreation Reserve with an Outdoor Survival Expert from Adventure Southland getting savvy with survival skills such as building a campfire to roast marshmallows, navigating in the bush, and finishing the afternoon with water-based activities in the creek.
Student interest will determine how many sessions there are of each activity and which days they run. After registrations close students will be allocated to a session within the following dates:
- Bushcraft = between Tuesday Nov 18th and Thursday Nov 20th
- Orienteering & Disc Golf = between Monday Nov 24th and Wednesday Nov 22nd
- Table Top Gaming = between Monday Nov 24th and Tuesday Nov 25th
Each day will run within usual school hours. Students need to be at SGHS at 8:50am and will be back by 3:00pm (if based elsewhere).
Registration
Please indicate below the activity or activities that you wish to register for. There will likely only be limited spaces for some activities. If so preference will be given to those who completed payment first. If you register and pay for an event but there isn’t space for your child then you will receive a full refund.
Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.
Gear Requirements
See attached HERE for a list of the gear requirements for each activity.
Each event contains risks. Some of these risks include:
- Bushcraft = Use of fire, trips, getting lost, accidents in the water, hypothermia/hyperthermia
- Orienteering & Disc Golf = Accidents with traffic, injuries during physical activities, and risks from being unsupervised in public places
- Table Top Gaming = Equivalent risks to a regular day at school
These risks will be managed through planning and communication, including ensuring students have appropriate gear and the choice of sites that give students a suitable level of challenge. This event is managed school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan in conjunction with any external providers. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.
If you have any questions about this activity, including about the school’s safety management systems, please feel free to contact me. My email is [email protected]
It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in them being removed from the activity and restricted access to future opportunities.
