As part of our Year 10 Education Outside the Classroom programme your child has the opportunity to participate in a three day camp at Mavora Lakes. This camp is a chance for your child to develop confidence and skills in enjoying outdoor recreation in Southland.

Students will be involved in numerous aspects of typical camp life like setting up tents, campfire cooking, and using long drop toilets. They’ll get to enjoy many of the outdoor activities Mavora Lakes has to offer, both in and out of the water, as well as generally enjoying some fun and relaxation with their friends in one of Southland’s best spots.

Activities:
Exact activities will depend on weather and other conditions, however we hope to include:

• Tube rafting
• Sit on top kayaking
• River crossing and safety
• Bushwalking
• Outdoor games
• Chilling with friends in nature

Dates:  Wednesday 12 November to Friday 14 November. Students are to be at school by 8:30 for a 9:00am departure on Wednesday and estimated to be back at school by 2:30pm on Friday

Venue: Students will be sleeping in tents at Mavora Lakes with activities in the nearby area.

Cellphones: There is not cellphone access at Mavora Lakes. In line with the government’s “Phone Away For The Day” policy students are not to use or have their phone during camp activities.

Transport: Students will be transported to and from camp by bus and vans. The vans will also be used on site to shuttle students to and from camp. Vehicles will be driven by either SGHS staff members or Adventure Southland instructors.

Food: Students will be responsible for bringing and preparing their own food. They are encouraged to do this in groups with their friends. Some guidance on suitable food can be found here 

Registration: This camp costs $280 per student – this covers transport, instructors, gear, and other incidental costs. Please note this does not include food costs. Please pay and complete the permission form by Friday 24 October 2025.

Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

Gear Requirements: Click HERE for gear list. SGHS has got some tents that we are able to lend out to students, however where possible students are encouraged to bring one from home or share with friends who have one.

Preparation: To help prepare for camp we will be running a preparation afternoon on Thursday November 6 which students will attend rather than their scheduled classes. During this they need to bring in their groups tent and practice putting it up on the school oval, will do some practice cooking with gas stoves, and take part in some other camp briefings. Afterward students can either leave their tents in a locked storage shed at school or take them home until camp.

This event contains risks including drowning, burns, and hypothermia. These risks will be managed through planning and communication, including use of personal protective equipment and the choice of sites that give students a suitable level of challenge. This event is jointly managed by Adventure Southland and school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  Adventure Southland instructors are qualified and trained in the activities they lead and follow best practices for all activities as well as adding a critical layer of risk management. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.
