As the National Young Farmers event is being held in Invercargill this year, we have a unique opportunity to create our own version of this competition. Where all the students involved in the Young Farmers club can rotate around different stations/activities learning key Agricultural skills to earn points for their team.  They will be having to identify pests, seeds, erect an electric fence, set up a water trough, carry posts, reverse a tractor, build a fence etc. The event is only open to Southland Girls High School students through our close association with the Ministry of Primary Industries, where they are trying to increase the number of girls entering the Ag industry. This is the first opportunity to stage an event like this and one the students will get a lot out of.

Date: Thursday 23 October 2025

Time: 3.30-7.30pm

Venue: Back field, East Wing Southland Girls High School

Clothing and equipment required: Mufti as carrying out many different stations and you need to be in comfortable clothing.

Food: BBQ to finish off supplied free by the businesses

Cost: No cost

This event contains risks, including slipping over, cutting themselves while completing an activity or moving between stations/obstacles. This event is supervised by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes careful outline of the safety instructions at the beginning of the day and at each of the stations/activities before carrying out the specific event. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in not attending any future Young Farmers events.
