Mrs Young took some of her Year 12 Agriculture students to participate in this ground breaking pilot study to investigate the impact of winter grazing on the environment. The students learnt a lot and had to think about what decisions to make on the farm and how this affects other factors.
The paddock the students will be looking at has 1 hectare of direct drilled swedes in it and 1 hectare of traditionally cultivated, ridged swedes. It is being grazed simultaneously by 130 mixed age, cross bred dairy cows. These cows will be in this paddock for a total of 30 days. Their swede diet is being supplemented with one bale of hay, and three bales of balage per day.
