L1 Geography Mataura River Field Trip – Thursday 23 April 2026

Level 1 Geography Fieldtrip – Mataura River

Our Geography Level 1 classes will be studying Achievement Standard 91933 Explore an Environment using Data.  We will be studying fluvial processes in class with a specific focus on the Mataura River.  We will then go on this field trip to collect a variety of data points relating to the Mataura River.  From this data, students will write a report, describing what they have learnt about the river through the data gathered.

Students will collect data in groups in multiple locations along the banks of the Mataura River on the day of the fieldtrip.  Teachers will complete a pre-trip visit to these locations to ensure that they are safe locations for data gathering for a large group.

Date: Thursday 23 April 2026. Postponement day Tuesday 28 April 2026.

Departure:  We will be catching a bus out the front of the school and departing at 8.50am.

Return:  We will return to school by 3pm.

Transportation: We will travel to the Mataura River by bus as a group

This event contains risks, including transportation and risk of falling in water when collecting data. This event is supervised by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes careful planning of where to collect data for student safety, and how to collect it in a safe manner. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.  If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Ainslee Wilson – [email protected] or 032116030.

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in them not being able to participate in the data collection and having to wait in the bus until the data collection is completed by others.
