Southland Girls’ High School Very Own Young Farmers Event

This exciting event will provide Young Farmers Club members with a unique opportunity to experience a wide range of practical agricultural skills and career pathways through a series of hands-on activity stations. Working in teams, students will rotate around each station, earning points while learning valuable skills that are used every day across the agriculture sector. Activities may include changing a tyre, fencing and electric fence set-up, securing loads on a trailer, chainsaw maintenance and safety, predator and pest control, assembling a shearing handpiece, vehicle pre-start checks, fitting chains to tyres, identifying different wool types and qualities, learning about deer breeds and velvet grading, and participating in industry-led challenges presented by organisations such as Fonterra, Open Country and PGG Wrightson. Students will also enjoy some fun interactive activities, including riding a specially designed bicycle-powered smoothie maker, where pedalling powers the blender to create a milk smoothie. 

This event is an exclusive opportunity for Southland Girls’ High School students and has been made possible through our strong association with the Ministry for Primary Industries, which is committed to increasing the number of young women entering the agricultural industry. As the first event of its kind, it offers students a fantastic chance to build practical skills, connect with industry professionals, explore future career options, and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse opportunities available within New Zealand’s primary industries. We are confident that students will gain a great deal from this engaging and memorable experience. 

Date: Wednesday 14th October 2026  

Time: 3.30pm – 6.00pm

Clothing and equipment required: Mufti as carrying out many different stations and you need to be in comfortable clothing. 

Costs: $5 .00. Please pay by 30 September 2026. 

Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

Venue: Southland Girls High School , back field, east wing 

 This event contains risks, including slipping over, cutting themselves while completing an activity or moving between stations/obstacles. This event is supervised by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes careful outline of the safety instructions at the beginning of the day and at each of the stations/activities before carrying out the specific event. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels, they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.  If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Mel Young and Grace Buckingham on 03 2116030.

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in not attending any future Young Farmers events.

These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. I understand that sports, trips, and extra-curricular activities are opportunities for me to learn, practice skills, and gain attitudes and values in an environment outside of the school.  I realise that this requires me to take on genuine responsibility for my own enjoyment and safety and that of others.

  • Show courtesy and consideration to others.
  • Follow the rules and instructions of staff and other supervisors at the events.
  • Look after myself and my personal belongings.
  • Declare medical conditions that could affect participation in the events.
  • Accept the rules set by the school for the events.
  • Take part in all activities within ‘challenge-by-choice’ options

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
