As part of our Education Outside the Classroom programme, our Year 7 students will be embarking on their annual camp to Dunedin in Term 4. The goals of this camp are to provide an urban experience for our Year 7 students as a change from the outdoors camps that many have experienced in Year 6, and to provide opportunities for social interaction with peers and adults in a range of places and learning settings that are unavailable in Invercargill. The camp has strong ties to our learning during the year in each term.
A detailed camp programme will be available closer to your child’s camp. The main camp activities include:
- Otago Museum: Exhibition Activities
- Toitu – Otago Early Settlers Museum: Education Programme
- Lan Yuan Gardens Tour
- Otago Aquarium: Supper in the Sea Programme
- Larnach’s castle Tour
- Moana Pool: Hydroslide/Recreation
- Unipol Gymnasium activities and Step Class
- Dunedin Art Gallery: Art Class
- Beach excursion (weather permitting)
- Mall: Recreation
Supervision: Each class will be accompanied by SGHS staff members and Police Vetted parent helpers.
Parental Help: School camps have proven to be very popular with parents and we encourage you to attend. However, there is a limit on how many we can take and this varies from class to class. The cost for parent helpers is $160.00.
If you are interested in going with your child’s homeroom class to Dunedin, please email their homeroom teacher for information about the role and how to apply. (Email format for teachers is: [email protected]). All parent helpers need to be Police Vetted with SGHS, this process can take a while so please get in contact ASAP to get the process started. All parent documents are due by Friday 21st August 2026.

Spending Money: Time permitting, the students will be able to spend some time in the Meridian mall. Spending money (small amount) is optional.
This event contains risks, including urban city environments, traffic, members of the general public, and behaviours at public places (eg swimming pool, shopping centre). Students will be directly supervised by school staff and parent helpers except for a designated period of time at Meridian Mall where students will be in groups of 2 or 3 with staff available at specified points.
This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This will be managed through careful planning and communication, including clear instructions to students as to parameters for safe behaviour and staying in groups in public places. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact your child’s homeroom teacher in the first instance.
It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in removal from the trip at your expense and restricted access to future trips.
Please pay and ocmpplete the permission form by Friday 25 September 2026.
