During Term 3 our Year 7 students will take part in swimming lessons at Splash Palace. This will be part of their compulsory Physical Education programme.
There are alarming statistics of drownings amongst children and adults in New Zealand resulting from a lack of experience and education in the water. Therefore, we will be focusing on confidence in the water, swimming to survive, stroke development, and will also include skill and fun-based sections. Your child will be taught by a combination of qualified swim instructors, and teachers skilled in this area.
Our swimming booking starts on Tuesday 25th August 2026 and runs until Wednesday 23rd September 2026, 9:00am – 10:00am. Each class has 7 sessions over this period of time (they do not swim every day).
- Students will meet at school in their Homeroom and will walk together to the pool at 8:50 am sharp.
- We recommend that students wear school regulation jackets to keep themselves warm on the walk back to school after swimming.
- We highly recommend all students wear goggles in the pool. No baggy t-shirts or casual shorts will be permitted. Swimming shorts/board shorts/rash type tops will be acceptable. (Please make sure everything is clearly named)
- If your child is not swimming for any of these sessions, they MUST have a note from home or alternatively an email from home sent to your child’s homeroom teacher.
- Please ensure your child’s health/medical information is up to date on Edge and that they bring their personal medication to the pool if required.
- There is no cost for these lessons as they are funded by the ILT.
- Swimming Timetable: Each homeroom class will receive a specific swimming timetable for their class. Teachers will share their class timetable with the students to ensure they are planned and ready for each lesson.
This event contains risks, including drowning. All swimming lessons are supervised by school staff and pool staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan and Splash Palace’s safety management plan. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Amanda Tiplady on 03 2116030 or [email protected].
