Y12 Agriculture and Young Farmers Club – Quad Bike Safety 14 May 2025

We have a very special opportunity for our Year 12 Agriculture class, as well as 20 students (first 20 to sign up and priority will be given to senior students) involved in the Young Farmers club to learn how to safely ride a quad bike. The quad bikes and trailers have been kindly supplied by Southern Honda and the focus is on safely manoeuvring the bikes around a predetermined area, as well as reversing a trailer attached to the bikes.

The Year 12 Ag class will carry out this activity during their period 2 class, while the 20 students from the Young farmers club will complete this activity during their lunch break.  This is the first time we have had quad bikes at girls high and we are working hard to build a strong relationship between the Agricultural community and our Young Farmers club, as well as our Ag class. We are trying to get as many of these events as possible. Keep an eye out for other amazing opportunities and if you can offer a hands-on practical activity please get in touch with Mel or Kate at school.

This event contains risks, including falling off a quad bike or hitting an object while riding the bike. This event is supervised by school staff who will manage the risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes careful use of appropriate nonslip footwear, following the safety instructions before riding the quad bikes, listening carefully to all adults running the activity, and all bikes will have a speed limiter on them to ensure students travel at a safe speed. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.  If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Mel Young [email protected]  or Kate Gilchrist [email protected] at 03 2116130.

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in your child being picked up by a caregiver and not attending further Year 12 Agriculture or future Young Farmers events.
