In May we have the opportunity to take the Level 1 Visual Art Students to visit Te Rau Marae in Bluff. The experience the students have here will connect to the learning they are doing around out local history and understanding of Te Ao Māori concepts.  

We will learn about the artworks in Tahu Potiki Whare Rau (the meeting house) and the meaning behind these as part of the learning required for the level 1 visual arts course. The students will be asked to take notes and we will also spend time drawing. When we finish at the Marae we will then spend the afternoon gathering information, drawing, photographing and creating artworks about the surrounding area of Stirling point.  

The students will be given their teachers cell phone number and instructions for the trip will be discussed prior to leaving.  

Details:  

Date: Thursday 15 May  Times: 9am Depart Southland Girls High School on Go Bus, 9.30am Arrive Te Rau Aroha Marae, Bluff – Here we will spend time learning, listening and drawing, 12pm Depart Te Rau Aroha Marae and head Stirling Point, the bush and beach in this area, where we will have lunch and spend time drawing, photographing and creating work that is part of an internal assessment. 2.30pm Depart Bluff  3pm Arrive Southland Girls High School. 

Clothing: The students will be required to wear correct uniform and we expect student behaviour to meet our high standards at all times.  Students will be asked to bring sun hats or rain coats depending on the weather forecast.

Food: Students will be given kai at Te Rau Aroha Marae for morning tea but will need to bring their own packed lunch and water bottles.  

Cost: $20.00 Payment to be made by 1 May 2025

• Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy 

 This event contains risks, including travel to and from Bluff and being out in the elements.  This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  This includes careful planning, following the itinerary and instructions from staff at Te Rau Marae if there is an emergency. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in follow up with YLCs on the return to school.
