Your child has been selected to represent Southland Girls’ High School in the Southland Maths Association SMAC Maths Competition.
What is SMAC Maths?
SMAC Maths is a problem-solving competition for Southland students in years 7-10. They compete in teams of 4 by answering up to 40 maths problems in 30 minutes. Senior Students are coaches and markers for teams.
How does it work?
The students will commit to one lunch time practice a week with coaches and then compete at the end of Term 3 in an after-school competition. We will hold 3 Practice Competition dates throughout Terms 2 and 3.
PRACTICES: Year 7 Tuesday lunchtimes, Years 8 Wednesday lunchtimes in 4JM. Year 9s and 10s will only be required to come to practice competitions. Dates TBC.
COST: There is no cost for the students to compete. They will receive a badge on the night of the competition in recognition of their hard work and participation in the competition.
DATE: Wednesday, 25th September 2024
VENUE: James Hargest College Senior Campus Gymnasium. You will need to make your own way to and from the venue.
DRESS: Winter uniform: kilt, blouse & tie, navy tights and red shoes, jersey or blazer. Depending on weather closer to the time, this may change to full summer uniform.

START TIMES: Year 7 is competing at: 5:00 pm, Year 8 is competing at: 5:45 pm, Year 9 is competing at: 6:45 pm, Year 10 is competing at: 7:30 pm
It has been requested that you arrive 15 minutes before the start of your competition and that you are patient should the previous section run over time. Please bring your calculator with you.
This event is a low risk event. This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Lucy Richardson 03 211 60 30.
It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in parents having to come and pick their child up.
