As part of the Year 13 Agriculture programme, students will soon begin a practical investigation focused on potatoes—how they are grown, how they reach consumers, and how New Zealand production fits within global markets. We are extremely fortunate that Pyper’s Produce has generously offered to host our class during an Agriculture lesson. This is the first time our students have had the opportunity to visit a largescale potato operation here in Southland, giving them valuable insight into an industry that plays a significant role in our region.
During the visit, students will hear directly from experts at Pyper’s, observe the full production process, and gain an understanding of the challenges growers face, particularly with Southland’s unpredictable climate. This field trip is an essential component of their 4credit internal assessment, allowing students to explore consumer preferences, test key variables related to potato quality, and use their findings to determine what is required to grow potatoes that meet market demands.

This event contains risks, including slipping over while walking in the potato factory or in the paddock, banging head on gear. This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks and all students will get a health and safety briefing when they get to Pyper’s produce. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Mel Young on 03 2116030 or [email protected]
It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in your child not being allowed to attend future Agriculture field trips.
