Y7 Community Breakout Programme 2026

In Term 2 our Year 7s will be engaging in a Community Breakout programme. This essentially means they will be exploring different aspects of our community and ways in which they can contribute and give back to these community places and initiatives. This links with our Turangawaewae Term 1 learning as well.

The places involved are:

  1. Invercargill City Library
  2. Queen’s Park
  3. Stadium Southland ILT Velodrome
  4. Southland Badminton Hall
  5. Southland Table Tennis.

The programme is in two parts

  1. Community locations / facilities – Invercargill Library and Queen’s Park.

These visits will take part in the Weeks 2 and 3 of Term 2 for all Year 7 classes.

  1. “Let’s Get Active” – Badminton, Cycling,/Pickle ball and Table Tennis.

This will take place in Term 2 for 7SS, 7AD and 7CC.  Term 3 for 7AE, 7 DH and 7KB.

LET’S GET ACTIVE Timetables for 7AE, 7DH and 7KB classes will be shared  later next term.

Costings for the Community Breakout programme are as follows1:

  1. COMMUNITY LOCATIONS – $15  (transport cost)
  2. LET”S GET ACTIVE –               $25 (includes instructors transport and  Equipment and venue hire)

TOTAL :   $40 per student. Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

What to wear: For all of these activities students are to wear full and correct PE gear with gym shoes/sneakers. This includes PE top, navy or black shorts or tights. The weather could be cold, so students are welcome to wear a navy or black thermal with their PE top along with a navy or black jacket.

What to bring:

  • For the Library and Queens Park visit students will need their back pack with a drink bottle, packed lunch and morning tea (no heat ups or canteen) and their pencil case.
  • For Let’s Get Active students will need to bring a drink bottle and a cycling helmet if they have one (we do have some spares available).

This event contains risks, including  transportation, walking around the park, and sport related injuries. This event is supervised by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan, each staff member also holds a valid First Aid Certificate.  While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact our Head of Junior School  [email protected]

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in appropriate safety measures being applied for everyone’s wellbeing.

These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.
