Year 10 EOTC Days – 23 and 30 Nov and 25-27 Nov 2026

As part of our Year 10 Education Outside the Classroom programme your child has the opportunity to participate in one day tasters of local recreation activities in and around Invercargill. None of these activities require any prior experience, just enthusiasm and an interest in giving it a go.

This year the day trip options available are:

Outdoor Climbing @ Castle Downs – $123

Students will learn safe techniques for rock climbing in practical outdoor settings, including belaying others, and generally develop their confidence in undertaking outdoor activities and challenging situations.

Kayaking @ Bluff Harbour – $158

Students will develop skills in kayaking as they explore the harbour, including kayaking around the ships graveyard, lunch at Tikore Island and if they’re lucky maybe spotting a seagull chick.

Table Top Games @ SGHS – $5

Students will spend the day at SGHS learning and playing a variety of different tabletop games including Role Playing Games like Dungeons & Dragons, and modern board and card games.

Three Days of Art @ SGHS and around town- $30

Students will spend three days trying out a range of different art techniques at school and locations around Invercargill such as Demolition World, Queens Park, and Sandy Point. Exact activities and art techniques will cater to student interest, previous examples include photography, print making, and cyanotypes.

When
Three Days of Art will be held from Wed 25 November  till Friday 27 November.

All other activities will be held between Monday 23 November and Monday 30 November. Student interest will determine how many sessions there are of each activity and which days they run. These will be advised after the registration closing date.

Each day will run within usual school hours. Students should ensure that they are at school promptly by 8:45am as those trips that go offsite may be departing shortly after 9:00am.

Registration
Please indicate below the activity or activities that you wish to register for. There will likely only be limited spaces for some activities. If so preference will be given to those who completed payment first.

If you register and pay for an event but there isn’t space for your child then you will receive a full refund.

For those activities with outside contractors (kayaking, outdoor climbing) you will not be able to get a refund if you cancel unless we are able to find another student to fill the spot.

Payment: Payment is due by Friday 30 October. For outdoor climbing and kayaking the main costs are van usage, qualified outdoor instructors. For Table Top Games and Three Days of Art the main costs are equipment and consumables.

Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

Each event contains risks. Some of these risks include:

  • Climbing = Falling, rock fall, weather conditions, and potential significant impact injuries
  • Kayaking = Accidents in the water, drowning, weather conditions, hypothermia
  • Table Top Games = Equivalent risks to a standard day at school
  • Art Activities = Traffic, interactions with the public, getting lost

These risks will be managed through planning and communication, including use of personal protective equipment and the choice of sites that give students a suitable level of challenge. This event is jointly managed by Adventure Southland and school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  Adventure Southland instructors are qualified and trained in the activities they lead and follow best practices for all activities as well as adding a critical layer of risk management. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in them being removed from the activity and restricted access to future opportunities.

These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. I understand that sports, trips, and extra-curricular activities are opportunities for me to learn, practice skills, and gain attitudes and values in an environment outside of the school.  I realise that this requires me to take on genuine responsibility for my own enjoyment and safety and that of others.

  • Show courtesy and consideration to others.
  • Follow the rules and instructions of staff and other supervisors at the events.
  • Look after myself and my personal belongings.
  • Declare medical conditions that could affect participation in the events.
  • Accept the rules set by the school for the events.
  • Take part in all activities within ‘challenge-by-choice’ options

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
