University of Otago Science Wananga -12-14 March 2025

Science Wānanga is returning to Murihiku Marae, and we are looking forward to sharing mātauranga pūtaiao to your tamaiti. This is a 3 day noho marae. The kaupapa is all about inspiring and sparkling interest of pūtaiao to rangatahi Māori. We work in collaboration with Te Rūnanga o Waihōpai, they have set two paupapa, mahinga kai in the Waihōpai awa and renewable energy. We will have kaipukenga and tauira form Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka – University of Otago who will deliver fun hands on science activities on the two kaupapa.

Sciences:

  • Chemistry, renewable energy – hydrogen fuel cells
  • Freshwater ecology, awa visit, observation and identification within the area
  • Physics, water quality and testing using lasers

Date: 12-14 March 2025

Time: We will be leaving school at 2.30pm on Wednesday 12 March and the Wānanga ends at 1.30pm at Murihiku Marae

Transport: students and belongings will be taken to the marae by Go BUs. Students will b expected ot be collected form the marae on the Friday.

Clothing: There will be a gear list emailed out to all student.

Costs: Koha will be covered by the science department

Venue: Murihiku Marae, 408 Tramways Road, Invercargill

This event contains risks, including travelling a a van, collecting data from the Waihōpai river and outdoor games at Murihiku Marae. This event is supervised by school staff, University of Otago Staff and Waihōpai Runaka staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan and the University of Otago’s safety management plan. while risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in the student being collected from the Wānanga.

These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
  • My actions put me or others in any danger.
