We have an incredible staff here at SGHS – including the fabulous Mrs Young who attended Queenstown Research Week (QRW) at the end of August.
The event attracts scientists, nobel winners, dames, and professors from all around the world. As one of only 3 teachers nationwide accepted to attend it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
With subjects ranging from cutting edge medical advancements to the myriad of scientists sharing their latest work, the information shared was world class.
Highlights of the event – listening to Dame Professor Margaret Brimble talk about getting a drug onto the market that patients can access through their GP to treat Rhett’s syndrome – a solution 20 years in the making.
Listening to Dr Hilary Sheppard using patients skin cells to grow new skin on agar and then attaching this to their body.
Other speakers talked about using 3D printers to create cartilage, treating leukemia, and using Artificial Intelligence to solve the shortage of lab technicians that are near retirement age, diagnosing patients much faster and more accurately. Due to our growing population, looking at growing fruit trees inside massive tunnel houses and without the need for pollinators.
Mrs Young has already shared some of this learning with her classes and other science department staff – a truly inspirational opportunity that will enrich our students learning.
