Continuing along from our Adventure Based Learning Day at the beginning of the year our Y9 students have another EOTC Activity available this term – Bushcraft Skills at Dunsdale Reserve.
Students will spend the day at Dunsdale Recreation Reserve with an Outdoor Survival Expert from Adventure Southland getting savvy with survival skills such as building a campfire to roast marshmallows, navigating in the bush, and (if the weather is nice!) finishing the afternoon with water-based activities in the creek.
When
Students will be allocated to a session between Monday November 23rd and Monday November 30th. Student interest will determine how many sessions there are and which days they run. These will be advised after the registration closing date. Each day will run within usual school hours. Students should ensure that they are at school promptly by 8:45am as those trips that go offsite may be departing shortly after 9:00am.
Registration
There will likely only be limited spaces for this activity. If so preference will be given to those who completed payment first. If you register and pay for an event but there isn’t space for your child then you will receive a full refund.
As this activity involves outside contractors you will not be able to get a refund if you cancel unless we are able to find another student to fill the spot.
Payment
The cost for this trip is $100.00. The main expenses for this activity are van usage and qualified outdoor instructors. Payment is due by Friday 30 October.
Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

Events such as this contain risks. Some of these risks include use of fire, trips, getting lost, accidents in the water, hypothermia/hyperthermia. These risks will be managed through planning and communication, including ensuring students have appropriate gear, suitably experienced staff, and the choice of sites that give students a suitable level of challenge. This event is managed school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan in conjunction with external providers. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. Details of Adventure Southland’s Safety and Hazard management system can be found here: https://www.adventuresouthland.co.nz/safety-and-hazard-management/
If you have any questions about this activity, including about the school’s safety management systems, please feel free to contact me. My email is [email protected]
It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in them being removed from the activity and restricted access to future opportunities.
As part of our Year 9 Education Outside the Classroom programme your child has the opportunity to participate in one day tasters of local recreation activities in and around Invercargill. None of these activities require any prior experience – just enthusiasm and an interest in giving it a go.
Please pay and complete the permission form by Friday 30 October.
