Maatangi Whenua Geography Quiz – 12 August 2026

We are pleased to inform you that a group of students from Southland Girls’ High School will be attending the Māatangi Whenua Interschool Quiz Competition, involving schools from Southland and Otago. 

Event: Māatangi Whenua – Interschool Quiz Competition
Date: Wednesday 12 August 2026 (Week 4, Term 3)
Location: Te Pou o MātauāAu (Town Hall), Balclutha
Start Time: 12.00 pm 

Transport: Students will travel to and from Balclutha by school van, driven by a schoolapproved staff member. All transport will be managed in accordance with the school’s health and safety and vehicle use procedures. 

Departure:  Students will depart from school in the morning (exact departure time will be confirmed closer to the date). 

Return: Students are expected to return to school around 5pm. Parents will be notified of any delays. 

Supervision: Students will be supervised at all times by school staff.  

What Students Need to Bring : School uniform, Packed lunch and drink bottle, Any personal items needed for the day, Students should not bring valuables or large sums of money. 

Cost: There is no cost for students to attend this event. 

This event contains some risks, including travel by vehicle and being in a public venue. These risks will be managed by staff following the school’s safety management plan, including vehicle safety checks, active supervision, and clear behaviour expectations. While risks cannot be completely eliminated, they will be maintained at an acceptable level for the learning value of this experience.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiental value. These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.
