Your child has signed up to be a coach for Southland Girls’ High School in the Southland Maths Association SMAC Maths Competition.

What is SMAC Maths?

SMAC Maths is a maths problem-solving competition for Southland students in years 7-10. They compete in teams of 4 by answering up to 40 maths problems in 30 minutes.

How does it work?

The students will commit to 2 practice competitions per term with coaches and then compete at the end of Term 3 in an after-school competition.

PRACTICES

YEAR 7: Wednesday 22^nd and 29^th April introduction practices plus practice competitions.

YEAR 8, 9 & 10: Practice Competition’s Only

PRACTICE COMPETITIONS: Wednesdays 6^th May, 24^th June, 5^th August and 2^nd September. Lunchtimes in SGHS West Hall.

EVENT DETAILS

DATE:   Wednesday 23^rd September 2026.  (Last Wednesday of Term 3).

VENUE: James Hargest College Senior Campus Gymnasium. You will need to make your own way to and from the venue.

COST: There is no cost for the girls to compete. They will receive a badge on the night of the competition in recognition of their hard work and participation in the competition.

DRESS:  Correct full summer or winter uniform. (Either is fine unless summer dress permission has not been given by the school by the date of competition).

REQUIREMENTS: Pens will be provided. Bringing a drink bottle is a good idea if marking multiple sessions.

START TIMES:

It has been requested that you arrive 15 minutes before the start of your competition and that you are patient should the previous section run over time. Coaches will commit to what sessions they can mark at closer to the time of the competition.

This event is a low risk event. This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in parents having to come and pick their child up.
