As part of our Year 10 Education Outside the Classroom programme your child has the opportunity to participate in one day tasters of local outdoor activities in Term 4. This year the options available are:

Outdoor Climbing at Castle Downs – $118

Students will learn safe techniques for rock climbing in practical outdoor settings, including belaying others, and generally develop their confidence in undertaking outdoor activities and challenging situations.

Kayaking in Bluff Harbour – $153

Students will develop skills in kayaking as they explore the harbour, including kayaking around the ships graveyard, lunch at Tikore Island and if they’re lucky maybe spotting a seagull chick.

When: These activities will be held between Tuesday November 18^th and Thursday November 20^th. Student interest will determine how many sessions there are of each activity and which days they run. Each day will run within usual school hours. Students will depart SGHS at 9:00am and return at approximately 3:00pm, travelling to their activity’s location via van. Please be there by 8:45am to ensure prompt departure.

Registration: Please indicate below the activity or activities that you wish to register for. There will likely only be limited spaces for some activities. If so preference will be given to those who completed payment first.

If you register and pay for an event but there isn’t space for your child then you will receive a full refund. As these are small group events with outside contractors you will not be able to get a refund if you cancel unless we are able to find another student to fill the spot.

Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

Each event contains risks. Some of these risks include:

• Climbing = Falling, rock fall, weather conditions, and potential significant impact injuries
• Kayaking = Accidents in the water, drowning, weather conditions, hypothermia

These risks will be managed through planning and communication, including use of personal protective equipment and the choice of sites that give students a suitable level of challenge. This event is jointly managed by Adventure Southland and school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan.  Adventure Southland instructors are qualified and trained in the activities they lead and follow best practices for all activities as well as adding a critical layer of risk management. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated.  Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.

It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in them being removed from the activity and restricted access to future opportunities.
