Colours Awards and Prizegiving
Application Process:

Year 12 and 13 Students can apply for Colours Awards in Sports, Performing Arts and Significant Achievement Categories.

Students in any Year Level at SGHS can apply for the New Zealand Representative Award.

Application forms will be emailed to students, and hard copies are available from the Sports Office. Submit all applications either in writing to the Sports Office or via email by 4 September at 3 pm.

Please include all achievements and commendations from 2025 – 2026. T.I.Cs and coaches’ endorsements will be included during the application process.

Colours Ceremony Event

28 October 2026 from 5.00 pm-7.00 pm

All students will be notified by date to be confirmed on the outcome of their application. Letters will be sent to all students who apply. Whānau are invited to attend the Colours Awards evening.

Note: Applications make you eligible for the Colours Award, but it is not an automatic selection. The final decision is at the discretion of the Colours Committee.

How to apply for Colour and NZ Awards:

1. Awards Criteria: Sport, Performing Arts, Significant Achievement

  • You must be a Year 12 or Year 13 student
  • Represented the school in your discipline for at least 2 years at the highest school level.
  • Achieved individual excellence in your field beyond school performance eg representational teams/groups, high level performance, performances and accolades outside of SGHS. This can be across both years or this year only
  • Displayed role model qualities and contributed to SGHS and the community within your chosen field eg: elite level, coach, umpire, volunteer, leader.

  • The final decision is at the discretion of the Colours Committee

2. Awards Criteria:  Service Award

  • You must be a Year 12 or 13 student
  • Recognises students who represent the school in high-level coaching, mentoring, umpiring, officiating, or leadership roles.
  • Recipients demonstrate outstanding commitment, excellence, and service, while making a significant contribution to the development and success of individuals or teams within competitive, results-driven environments

3. Awards Criteria: New Zealand Representative

  • Students in any Year Level at SGHS can apply for the New Zealand Representative Award.
  • If you have represented NZ in the past year for your discipline (Sports, Performing Arts)

2026 Prizegiving

The Southland Girls’ High Prizegiving is held each year in the first week of December. Prizegiving recognises our students’ academic, cultural, and sporting successes in Y7-13.

We believe that the role modelling shown by our older students to our younger students at this ceremony is an inspiration for all those present.

As early as Y7, our younger students can also see the progressions for academic success and the various awards they can work towards.

Prizegiving is a formal occasion where we showcase our history and commitment to bicultural heritage. Our Kapa Haka begins the proceedings, followed by the school piper, who leads the teachers to the stage.

Established in 1879 by our Scottish forebearers, the bagpipes are a symbol of the connection to our early beginnings.

2026 Prizegiving will be held on Wednesday, 2nd December at the Invercargill Civic Theatre.

The ceremony will start at 3:00 pm and will run for approximately 2 hours.  Please be seated early, as seats are limited. 

  • Students who are prizewinners will receive an email approximately 20 November. The email will also be sent to parents.
  • Students who will be performing at the ceremony will be notified via email.

RISKS Disclosure

Weekly sports contains risks, including common injuries like strains, sprains, bruises and dislocations. These events are managed by the appropriate sporting body in conjunction with school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks, all risks will be outlined to the students. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in your child facing disciplinary actions on their return or sent home at the cost of the Whanau/parents or caregivers.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

I understand that sports, trips, and extra-curricular activities are opportunities for me to learn, practice skills, and gain attitudes and values in an environment outside of the school.  I realise that this requires me to take on genuine responsibility for my own enjoyment and safety and that of others.

I agree to do the following to make this happen:

  • Show courtesy and consideration to others.
  • Follow the rules and instructions of staff and other supervisors at the events.
  • Look after myself and my personal belongings.
  • Declare medical conditions that could affect participation in the events.
  • Accept the rules set by the school for the events.
  • Take part in all activities within ‘challenge-by-choice’ options

I understand that my parents / caregivers will be contacted and I may be sent home at their expense if:

  • My actions are considered unacceptable by staff / supervisors of these events.
  • I breach the behaviour / discipline standards of the school.
  • My actions put me or others in any danger.
