Y7-13 Southland Debating Regionals – 27 September 2026

On 27th of September students in the SGHS Debating Club will have the opportunity to participate in a regional debating competition at the James Hargest College Library. They will compete in 3 rounds of debating which will be adjudicated by law students from the University of Otago. The teams with the most wins will move onto the final rounds. There are three sections for this competition, years 7, and 8, years 9, and 10 and years 11,12, and 13; debates are catered to each section.  

Details: 

Cost: $25 per student ($75 per team of three)  Due 11 September. Please note: Board financial procedure requires payment in full, by the due date for your child to purchase resources, participate in sports or attend trips/events. Payments received will be allocated to the oldest unpaid fees and charges owing on your child’s account first. Extra-curricular activities operate on a “pay before you play” policy.

Time: Start at 9am. Students are expected to meet Miss Dalley at the JHC Library at 8.30am. The finals will start around 4pm and students are encouraged to stay and watch even if they don’t make the final round; students are however  free to leave once they have finished debating for the day and have checked with Miss Dalley. 

Clothing: Students need to be wearing their full winter uniform, and comply with school uniform jewellery and hairstyle regulations. 

Food: Students will need to bring packed lunches, as they will not be allowed to leave during the day. 

Staff Attending: Miss Bridget Dalley will be there supervising students. Whānau are encouraged to come and watch the debating. 

Transport: Students are to make their own way to and from the event.  

By joining a team, students commit to this competition. Once teams have registered and paid (by 11 September) no refunds will be issued.

This event is low risk including injuries, trips and falls while at the event. This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by the staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in them being sent home from the event.

Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value.
