As part of the Level 2 Agriculture course, we are investigating the Environmental impacts of Dairy Farming on our case study. The Waituna Lagoon. As part of this internal assessment, it is hugely beneficial for the students in the class to visit the lagoon, and then dairy farms within the catchment. To fully understand how different factors and farms directly contribute to the health of the lagoon, in particular a seagrass called Ruppia.
The field trip is directly related to our Level 2 internal assessment worth 4-credits called Reports on the Environmental Impact of the Production of a locally produced primary product.
The assessment task requires the girls to research how farming has impacted on the Waituna Lagoon environment and write a report that outlines the environmental impacts of primary production on that environment.
Listening to farmers talk about how they are reducing the environmental impacts and how effective they have been. Seeing first-hand what methods, they are trying and overall, the positive and negatives of these. The students can learn through another context and the farmers, and Environment Southland have given up their time to educate our students

- Uniform requirements: students to wear warm, old clothing that they don’t mind getting dirty. Please bring the following:
- gumboots or old shoes, hat, shoes to change into afterwards, full drink bottle, lunch/snacks, change of clothing in case you get wet on the trip.
- Transport: students will be transported by the school vans and private vehicle. This will be driven by our staff, Mrs Mel Young and Mrs Urte Bierlin.
This event contains risks, including slipping over while walking along the Waituna Lagoon track, or through paddocks, and when sampling the water quality at the lagoon. This event is managed by school staff who will manage risk and hazards according to the school’s safety management plan. This includes careful consideration of the risks. Students need to wear suitable footwear for when walking along the tracks or paddocks and listen to all safety briefings at each of the three locations. While risks can be maintained to acceptable levels they cannot be totally eliminated. Some risk is retained for its learning and experiential value. If you wish to come in to school to see our safety management systems or have any questions, feel free to contact Mel Young.
It is important for safety reasons that students follow instructions given to them by all staff and follow all appropriate school rules. Behaviour by students that is deemed dangerous and puts themselves and/or others at undue risk will result in your child being collected from the field trip and not attending any more Agriculture trips this year.
